As with any landscape design plan that includes <a title=\"Outdoor Fireplaces &amp; Fire Pits\" href=\"https:\/\/www.surroundslandscaping.com\/outdoor-fireplaces-fire-pits-mclean-va\/\">an outdoor fireplace or fire pit features<\/a>, location is a critical consideration.<\/p>\n<p>Key considerations for siting an outdoor fireplace or fire pit always include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>size of the structure in relation to the main house (not too big, not too small)<\/li>\n<li>lot size and proximity to home (don\u2019t crowd the space or block views)<\/li>\n<li>proximity to neighbors (smoke)<\/li>\n<li>prevailing wind direction (proper draw in the firebox)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These points are important both for aesthetic and practical reasons on any site and, in particular, for this Leesburg landscape and patio design project.\u00a0<a title=\"Landscape Fire Features\" href=\"https:\/\/www.surroundslandscaping.com\/portfolio\/landscape-fire-features\/\">View photos of Northern Virginia outside fireplaces and fire pits here<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Site Specific Issues<\/h3>\n<p>Set on a high bluff overlooking the Potomac River Valley, the backyard of this home is subject to some unpredictable wind conditions. Also, the houses in this development were built close to each other. So, we needed to take care not to disturb the neighbors with smoke. And, we had to locate the fireplace close to the main house \u2014 which means we had to be sensitive to size and scale. Our landscape architect had to weigh all the options to find the best location and orientation for this massive stone fireplace.<\/p>\n<h3>Wind Direction &amp; Outside Fireplace Location<\/h3>\n<p>Prevailing wind direction was the determining factor in the orientation and location of the fireplace.<\/p>\n<p>The most <em>desirable location aesthetically<\/em> would have been to set the fireplace with its back to the neighbor\u2019s side lot line. But that would have faced the hearth straight into the wind coming off the river.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>best location practically<\/em> would have been to set the fireplace back to the wind. Unfortunately, that would cause a composition problem. We needed to blend the new fireplace and raised patio with an existing patio. And this \u201cideal\u201d placement for wind protection would have created a visual barrier, essentially dividing the patio in half.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out that the <em>best solution was a compromise<\/em>. We set the fireplace with its back facing the house because the wind would be at least partially blocked from the side.<\/p>\n<h2>Design Thinking Turns An Obstacle Into An Opportunity<\/h2>\n<p>Usually, we try to site an outside fireplace at the property line or build it into a retaining wall some distance from the main house. So we rarely see the back wall of a fireplace. By adding a fountain and small garden area at the back of the fireplace (facing the house) we created a pleasing view from the dining room interior. Also, defining this small area cleverly offsets the possible claustrophobic\u00a0effect of such a massive stone structure so close to the house.<\/p>\n<h2>Outside Fireplace Concept Development<\/h2>\n<p>The original idea was to create a garden outside the dining room doors that led to a raised patio, then stepped down to a circular lawn. In this first version, the architect used planting beds to soften the effect of all the stonework and added a fire pit to the lower lawn area.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.surroundslandscaping.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Fire-Pit-formal-version.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1537 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.surroundslandscaping.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Fire-Pit-formal-version.jpg\" alt=\"sketch of fire pit and raised patio\" width=\"750\" height=\"599\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 750\/599;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But the client had her heart set on a fireplace. And to have it on the lower lawn would block views of the river. So, in the next version, we added a fireplace to the garden-patio-lawn configuration. A row of boxwoods along the property line creates a \u201cgreen wall\u201d for privacy from the neighbors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.surroundslandscaping.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Fireplace-concept-w-lawn.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1539 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.surroundslandscaping.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Fireplace-concept-w-lawn.jpg\" alt=\"patio design sketch with outdoor fireplace\" width=\"750\" height=\"604\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 750\/604;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The garden niche near the dining room doors was simplified. It also speaks to the importance of finding a good fit between a landscape architect and client. Our client summed it up this way:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We talked to so many companies\u2026.
